Design Philosophy

Sol brings a passion for Design , a desire to exceed the client’s goals, and the ability to solve problems. We encourage a Studio approach to closely collaborate with each Client because they are part of the Design Team.

We practice design with an attention to how buildings affect the people that inhabit them. We focus on the harmony between creativity and functionality. We believe that quality is conveyed with the sensory integration of light, sound and touch. We focus on taking the large idea of the complex down to the smallest detail, in this way the design is holistic.

sol design studio origins

Sol Design Studio was born from friendship, late nights in the studio, and a shared belief that design could do more than just solve problems—it could inspire. These three graduate students from the University of South Florida’s School of Architecture and Community Design — Carlos Molnar, Geno Knowles Jr., and Mike Renaud — found themselves sketching, debating, and imagining what architecture could become if it stayed true honest, good design ideologies.

By 2012, what started as informal discussions and joint design explorations had grown into a focused practice built on trust, integrity, and a drive to create architecture that matters. Ob-Zurv joined Sol Design Studio, uniting teams bound by a deep commitment to design excellence and the creative momentum behind their ideas.

In 2017, the team lost Geno Knowles Jr. tragically — one of the most gifted designers and dearest friends they had ever known. His spirit continues to guide Sol’s ethos: design with passion, care deeply for clients, and never lose the joy
of creation.

From those first sketches to today, Sol Design Studio has grown into a collaborative firm serving clients in hospitality, retail, workplace, residential, educational, and medical design, as well as interior design and land planning. The foundation Geno, Mike, and Carlos built remains strong — rooted in friendship, carried by passion, and dedicated to shaping spaces that bring light to the lives of others.
