Sol Design Studio was dedicated to assisting AIA Tampa Bay in transforming an old building in the up-and-coming West Tampa historic neighborhood into their new headquarters. The firm took the extra steps in researching the historic importance of the building and leading the effort to have the building recognized as a Contributing Structure in the Historic District. Time was devoted to the project not only as the designer and architect, but as the client representative and construction administrator for the AIA Tampa Bay.
HISTORY The Center for Architecture & Design dedicates itself to historic preservation by helping to revive the historic West Tampa neighborhood through converting an old warehouse into the AIA Tampa Bay (AIATB) headquarters. Situated adjacent to the “El Sidelo” Cigar Factory, it served as a restaurant and helped create a historic block in the neighborhood. Presented to the Historic Preservation Commission it was unanimously recommended that it be designated a Local Landmark in the West Tampa Multiple Properties Group. The building proudly displays the historic plaque at its entrance.
EXTERIOR The original windows that were closed with brick were opened so the community can once again appreciate the c. 1906 rhythm of the façade that was typical of the era. The deteriorating original white and yellow brick was protected and painted. The paint emphasizes the original decorative brick patterns below and above the windows and the historic dental detailing for the cornice. Period appropriate exterior light sconces added detail to the front façade. Logos on the south façade were painted in a gesture harkening back to typical signage of the times.
INTERIOR Inside, every historic item was refurbished and acted as inspiration for new design elements. The authentic terrazzo floors were restored to their original glory. The stamped tin ceiling was refurbished. An original glass office door was saved, and new doors were modeled after it. Historic trim in the office area was saved and replicated on new walls. An original wooden post and beam was incorporated into the design and can be appreciated from multiple spaces. A cooler door from about 1920, original to the building’s first expansion, was relocated and can be appreciated from the main gallery. Restrooms were designed using period appropriate tile.
TODAY The finished project provides gallery space, offices, and interior and exterior entertainment space for AIATB and the community.
